ANGELS DELIGHT AS TONBRIDGE WHIP UNITED INTO AN EARLY CHRISTMAS HEARTACHE
DO FOOTBALL AUTHORITIES CONSIDER FANS WHEN ARRANGING FIXTURES?
HEART-WARMING STORY OF UNITED FAN FROM READ EASY
Five wins on the spin, a home game in front of a big pre-Christmas Plainmoor crowd against lowly opposition – what could go wrong?
Well, the heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning around Torbay on the Friday evening led some into thinking, ‘surely the match must be in doubt?’ But come Saturday morning all was good.
Unfortunately, the Christmas Angels, sorry Tonbridge Angels had other ideas cheered on by 31 fans in the away section of Bristows plus a very vocal lady amongst the visiting officials sitting behind us in the Directors’ Box.
0-2 down in the previous home game against Worthing what’s the problem as Tonbridge, defying their league position, raced into a 2-0 lead.
United, with manager Paul Wotton absent with a ban from the touchline, sitting in Bristows, were off the pace with too many players having a decidedly off day.
Just underlines that nothing in football is guaranteed. If we could all predict results, we would win the pools every week!

There have clearly been things going on recently behind the scenes which is now in the open. Further explanations are expected in next week’s Chairmen’s Chat. If you have burning questions about the club’s financial state or drinking in stands or general questions about the direction of travel then send in your question to timh@torquayunited.com by 1pm on Monday 15th.

One of my aspirations is to see a Torquay academy producing home grown players who can play in the first team and maybe attract a big money move.
Take Worthing’s Brad Dolaghan, the South’s leading scorer, who, apart from a 16- month spell at West Ham, has come up from Worthing’s academy as an 8-year- old into the first team.
The last player here to get anywhere near the first team was Olaf Koszela, now at Chippenham.

The National League in their wisdom have announced that all matches at Steps 1 & 2 on the final day of the season, April 25th, will kick-off at 12.30pm.
Surely, this cannot have taken into account the travelling for away teams and their supporters. United’s trip is to Tonbridge, Chesham go to Dover whilst Truro’s match is at Aldershot and Brackley have to travel to Carlisle.

Over the last few weeks, in this fans’ zone column and in the page I write in the matchday programme, I have asked for your votes for the run-out music, basically a straight fight between ‘A Banda’ and ‘Children’.
The overwhelming winner is Robert Miles’ ‘Children’, easily the most popular.

United’s Women’s match was called off last Sunday – waterlogged pitch – but go again this Sunday at Frampton.

Today, as we know is a blank Saturday as our cup record is woeful and we’re not in the least bit jealous of Exeter’s FA Cup draw with, this time, Manchester City – should go some way towards helping their financial situation. Enough said!
