FISH  CHIPS  IN  WITH  HIS  FIRST  UNITED  GOAL  WHILE  DAN  MAKES  IT   A  SONNY  DAY

THE  ONE  RONNIE  SHOW  HAS  US  ALL  ENTERTAINED  WITH  SMILES

SEVENTEEN  GOALS  IN  TWO  GAMES  BOOST  WOMEN’S  TITLE  HOPES

As you might appreciate this has been a busy week in our role with the Bryn Consortium. Much of what has been happening remains confidential but the bulk of the week has involved finding the right manager for the club.

We all know the importance of getting this right and the responsibilities that go with the appointment. This coming week hopefully will prove pivotal.

In the meantime, we have all been impressed, but more importantly so have the players, with the impact Ronnie Jepson has made.

Those of us of a certain age will have fond memories of watching the Two Ronnies on BBC but here at Plainmoor we have the One Ronnie.

The one inescapable football fact is at this time of the season the fixtures come thick and fast so that the last performance is quickly forgotten. This is the case after last Saturday’s disappointing loss at promotion/play-off rivals Ebbsfleet.

We moved quickly on to Tuesday on a wet and windy night, so no surprise that the attendance was sub-3,000 with Salisbury proving to be a stubborn opposition. United in the first half showed glimmers of returning to form but after the interval the performance went up a gear, getting the crowd behind the team as the 12th man.

Dylan Morgan’s left foot rocket changed the game and after his appearance in The Cove as Man of the Match I asked him which was his best goal: the one he had scored that evening or his earlier against Hampton, he said, “You choose.”

So, which one was the best? You can message me at fanszone.tu@gmail.com.

Tuesday’s second goal was from Matt Jay who, now he’s been restored to the side, is displaying all the talent and ability for which he was signed.

In yesterday’s 2-1 win over Chesham ‘time wasters’ United for me Jay was outstanding. It was he who threaded that pass through for the tireless Sonny Fish to open his Torquay account. Just how many miles/kilometres did he run?

And one of the team’s unsung heroes was Dan Hayfield, scoring not only what was the winner but being in the right place at the right time to head what would have been a Chesham equaliser off the line from right under the crossbar.

Add in his lung busting run and tackle on Tuesday night to set up Jay’s goal and we have the type of player who will ‘run through a brick wall’ for you.

With the men’s side still very much in the play-off mix let’s not forget United’s Women as they go in pursuit of the South West Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division title. The women went one better after the previous Sunday’s 8-0 win over bottom side Bishops Lydeard last Sunday with a 9-0 victory over the same opponents.  Four different players figured in the scoring but pride of place goes, once again, to Connie Pengelly who netted four.

Today’s match at Saltash has been postponed so next Sunday is the ‘big one’ a home game against title rivals Forest Green.

Last Saturday’s Non-League Crowd Watch: Carlisle 10,520, York 6,277, Hartlepool 4,534, Rochdale 3,296.

Whilst we are all focused on our run-in, it’s worth keeping an eye on upcoming fixtures which have a bearing on the top seven places. Dorking are at Enfield on Tuesday and at Maidenhead on Saturday,

Maidenhead are home to Ebbsfleet on Tuesday, Worthing go to Totton, and both Ebbsflet and Hornchurch have home advantage all on Saturday.

Only four points separate second from seventh. Another exciting National South finish in store. How important will be United v Dorking on Tuesday March 24th?

Finally, Happy Mothering Sunday.
